Founded in 1935, the Cooperative Winery of the Winegrowers of Pezilla has
since been greatly extended and modernised. Its capacity today is 28,000
hectolitres and it has 140 members. Average annual production is 9,000
hectolitres of Côtes-du-Roussillon and Côtes-du-Roussillon-Villages, 4,500
hectolitres of Muscat-de-Rivesaltes, 2,500 hectolitres of Rivesaltes and
12,000 hectolitres of Vins de Pays. The aim of the winery is to pursue its
efforts in the field of quality by making up-market wines. A technician
visits the producers to help with vine management, the vines are monitored
on a plot-by-plot basis and the grapes are picked gradually as the bunches
ripen. The winery has modern equipment (pneumatic press, draining vats,
temperature control, a 600-barrel cellar, a sales stand etc) for producing
and maturing the wines. This Co-operative has long proven its serious
commitment to producing quality wines and can hope to see its sales to
individual clients rise in the future. The Côtes-du-Roussillon Generic wine
has aromas of red fruit and average structure - to be drunk within the next
2 years. The Côtes-du-Roussillon Château Pézilla is matured in barrels
and has aromas of vanilla and ripe red fruit. Good structure, can be drunk
now or kept to age for 3 to 4 years. Château Pézilla Cuvée Prestige is also aged in barrels and has a rich, complex nose of cooked fruit opening
out into notes of vanilla and fig. Good impression in the mouth,
well-balanced with nice silky tanins. Ready to drink now or can be kept for
4 to 5 years. The Rivesaltes Ambré, Tuilé or Hors d'Age have
aromas of candied citrus fruit, ripe fruit and cherry in eau de vie. The
Muscat, with its aromas of fresh grapes and citrus fruit, is full-bodied and
smooth in the mouth, to be drunk within the year.
